At this 2 day forum, open and free to the public, participants were invited to explore the work of Dr. Joan Vickers, Erik Bendix and Jessica Wolf. Dr. Vickers, Professor of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, is renowned for her work with elite athletes, surgeons and law enforcement personnel, enhancing their performance under stress, by means of a refined visual technique she calls The Quiet Eye. Jessica Wolf, Professor of the Alexander Technique at the Yale School of Drama, presented her work known as The Art of Breathing to performers and athletes alike, with the intent to bring more ease, fluidity and respiratory efficiency into execution of skill. Erik Bendix is an Alexander Technique Teacher and Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering. His workshops led students to deeply experience both vision and breath in relation to performance of their daily activities.
The Moving Mind Symposium at Pomona College created a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue between artists and scientists. At this 3 day symposium, experiential workshops and participatory lecture-demonstrations provided an arena where those interested in the cognitive or neurosciences might explore ideas through embodied movement; performing or visual artists might find insight into the creative process through the lens of research science; and scholars in the humanities and social sciences might consider the myriad of issues around the human body. Presenters at the Moving Mind included renowned Neuroscientist Dr. V.S. Ramachandran, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, whose School for Body-Mind Centering™ has profoundly influenced current fields of Movement Education and Body Therapies, Neuroscience and Dance Researcher Dr. Emily Cross, Visual Artist David Michalek and Alexander Teacher Meg Jolley.
